Each year Bethel students take part in a mission trip. The destinations range from UK, Norway and Guatemala to Lebanon, Congo and Alaska, to name a few! I opted for Chihuahua, Mexico. I will be part of a team of 10, lead by Dennis and Anita Flom who have lived in Mexico for several years and lead a Bethel mission trip to Chihuahua each year.
Chihuahua is located in north central Mexico. It is an industrial city of one million people and is one of Mexico’s 10 largest cities. Although corruption within the government and authorities is rife; leading to the third highest drug abuse rate in the nation, people there love Jesus and are working towards change.
The trip is from March 15th – March 22nd we will be based at a local church leading a service each evening and will have the opportunity to serve in several facilities during the day. In the past these have included an Orphanage, a Cancer Centre for children and Juvenile facilities.
Before Christmas we meet together as a team and Dennis and Anita shared their heart and expectations for the trip. It became quickly apparent that Dennis and Anita are excited to introduce us to Mexico and that the trip is as much for our benefit as for those we are going to serve. We each took a turn to share what we would like to see happen on the trip and if there was any area that we may find hard. I shared that I love ‘getting my hands dirty’ and would like to see healings and salvation, but that lack of sleep and creepy crawlies prove to be a challenge.
The goal on the trip is to touch the hearts and lives of the people that live in the city. We desire to give them life changing love encounters with Father God. We desire to train, equip, empower and encourage them to change their city. We want to commission them to bring revival to their nation.
3 testimonies from previous trips:
At an evening service a man arrived who couldn’t walk, he was severally bent over with twisted limbs. By the end of the service he was healed, dancing and worshipping.
A lady who came to church couldn't see without her very thick glasses, she was healed and able to read the Bible without any glasses.
The team visited and prayed for a Pastor in hospital who had fallen off a 30 ft ladder and landed on his head. The Doctors were concerned that he would not recover and live a normal life. He was later released from the hospital and declared fully functional, and has stayed in Chihuahua fighting for the city.
